BRIDGETOWN (Web Desk) – Nambia managed to beat Oman by 11 runs in the super over of the third match of the ICC T20 World Cup at Kensington Oval here on Monday.
Namibia batted first in the super over and scored 21 runs. Experienced all-rounder David Wiese contributed 13 runs and Gerhard Erasmus eight. Wiese hit a six and a four while Erasmus hit two boundaries on as many balls.
Wiese then restricted Oman to 10 runs and gave his team an 11-run victory. Oman lost a wicket in the bargain.
Earlier, Oman held Namibia in the third match of the ICC T20 World Cup and forced the tie into a "super over".
Set a victory target of 110 runs, Namibia could level the score at 109 losing six wickets on the last ball of the 20th over.
Jan Frylinck with 45 and Niko Davin with 24 were the significant contributors to Namibia total.
OMAN INNINGS
Namibia won the toss and put Oman in to bat and bowled them out for 109 runs in 19.4 overs.
Playing in their third consecutive T20 World Cup, Namibia will be looking to build on impressive previous showings. In 2021, they had surprised many by qualifying for Super 12s - at the expense of Ireland and the Netherlands - and in 2022 they surprised Sri Lanka in the first round, but fell short of progressing.
They made it to the current World Cup by dominating the Africa qualifier, winning all six of their games. With England and Australia also in their group, they will know that their best shot at the Super 8s involves beating Oman and Scotland and then pulling off an upset.
But Oman, their first opponents, could offer tough competition. When the two teams faced off in a five-match T20I series in April, Oman ran Namibia close, with Namibia eventually sealing a 3-2 win.
Oman, also making their third T20 World Cup appearance, come into the tournament with momentum on their side. They reached the ACC Premier Cup final, winning five games on the trot, although they lost to UAE in the final. They have a new captain for this World Cup, with Aqib Ilyas replacing the experienced Zeeshan Maqsood in the role.
