Shahida Qazi, you will be missed

The veteran journalist had been ailing and undergoing treatment at Karachi's Dr Ruth Pfau Hospital

KARACHI (Dunya News) – Journalism will be poorer in Pakistan as veteran correspondent and academic Shahida Qazi died here on Saturday. She was 79.

She served as chairperson of Karachi University's Mass Communication Department and was considered country’s first woman correspondent. She made out her name in the profession by virtue of her dedication and writing skills.

Shahida Qazi joined prestigious Dawn in 1966 as a reporter. After a two-year stint, she joined the Pakistan Television (PTV) where she rose to the position of first woman news editor. She served the state organisation for two decades.

After her retirement as a professor, she continued teaching at universities including Karachi's Muhammad Ali Jinnah University (MAJU). She quit her job during Covid-19 pandemic.

The veteran journalist had been ailing and undergoing treatment at Karachi's Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital.

According to a report, she was born in 1944 to a progressive family and completed her studies in mass communication from the newly established department of journalism at KU, as the first and only girl student.
