IMF dissatisfied with performance of Pakistan's finance minister: Sheikh Rashid

RAWALPINDI (Dunya News) – Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was not satisfied with the performance of Finance Minister Ishaq Dar.

The former interior minister, in a tweet, said the bailout package from the global lander seemed to be in doldrums. He added that the government had also planned to increase gas tariff by 74 per cent, which would put extra burden on the inflation-stricken public. He said horse-trading was at peak in Lahore amid calls for the confidence vote for Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi, adding that democracy was under attack.

All eyes were on the ruling of the Supreme Court (SC) in a case against National Accountability Bureau (NAB) laws  amendments.

Pakistan is currently making efforts to revive the IMF’s loan programme to control the depleting foreign exchange reserves that could trigger a fresh wave of inflation in the country. A day earlier, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar reiterated the government’s commitment to complete the IMF programme. He expressed his reaffirmation at a meeting with IMF s Mission Chief to Pakistan Nathan Porter on the sidelines of the International Conference on Climate Resilient Pakistan in Geneva.

During the meeting, they discussed challenges to regional economies in the wake of climate change.
