Online image to show journalists, doctors hanged in Nuremberg is false
(Reuters) – Facebook users have shared a photo said to show journalists and doctors executed at Nuremberg in Germany is false.
However, the image was taken in Ukraine and shows Nazi war criminals who were charged with mass murder.
Variations of the post (here , here , here) asked: “Still so sure you want to try to force me to get the experimental vaccination?” (here , here , here), continuing a trend of COVID-19 conspiracy theories comparing pandemic regulations and vaccines with Nazi atrocities (here , here , here , here).
But, like claims that medical staff administering COVID-19 vaccines are war criminals (here), the facts do not add up.
The photo is real but was not taken in Nuremberg, where surviving leaders of the German Nazi government were tried for war crimes - including the Holocaust - between 1945 and 1949.
Multiple sources state that it was taken in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, in 1946 (muse.jhu.edu/article/43136/pdf , here). Ukraine’s Shostka Museum of Local History dates the photograph to January 29 (bit.ly/2VoArzc), the day after a military tribunal tried German officers for war crime (photographed bit.ly/3fnJKqa).
The execution in Kyiv was also photographed from a different angle (here) and filmed (here).
The Nuremberg Casus Pacis Project, an initiative raising awareness of the trials (here), said one commissar was accused of being responsible for the deaths of 3,000 children shot on his orders in 1942, while a police lieutenant was tried for burning villages and shooting those displaced (here).
A holocaust remembrance centre called Yad Vashem also shared testimony from a Jewish witness who testified against German officers at the Kyiv trial. Dina Pronicheva said she escaped mass murder at Babi Yar (here), a ravine in Kyiv, where Nazi soldiers shot more than 33,000 Jews in two days (here).
VERDICT
False. This photo is real but does not show journalists or doctors in Nuremberg, Germany. Rather, it captures the moment Nazi officers were executed for war crimes in Kyiv, Ukraine.
