Govt lacks majority to legislate Senate election through open ballot: SM Qureshi
MULTAN (Dunya News) - Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said that PTI government does not have two-thirds majority to legislate holding Senate elections through open ballots.
Talking to media on Saturday, the Foreign Minister said that the government wants Senate elections through open ballot to maintain transparency and permanently end buying and selling of votes. He said that both PPP and PML-N had written in Article 23 of the Charter of Democracy that the Senate elections would be held through open ballot but now both the parties have backed down from their views.
“We have filed a petition in the Supreme Court to get the constitutional interpretation”, he added.
Shah Mahmood said that Pakistan’s history is witness to the fact that in the previous Senate elections, PTI expelled 20 of its members from the party after receiving complaints. On the one hand, PDM calls the government illegitimate but on the other, it wants to participate in the Senate elections and go to the same fake assembly.
He said that PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz has got Imran phobia. No matter how long the PDM protests for, there will be no reconciliation with looters.
