Electric bike battery explosion wrecks owner's home in Germany
Cologne – The battery of an electric bike exploded and wrecked a home in the western German town of Lengerich, even though it had been placed in a bathtub before the residents made their escape, police reported on Monday.
The shockwave from the explosion ripped the door and its frame from the wall on Friday evening. Damage to the flat in a residential complex was put at 200,000 euros (240,000 dollars).
The tenants heard a dull bang while they were watching television in the living room.
On investigating, the man found the smoking rechargeable battery in the dining room, where it had been placed next to other electric equipment, but was not connected to a charger.
He took the battery to the bathroom and placed it in the tub before he and his wife left the flat. The battery exploded as they were at the front door.
The tenants of the other flats also evacuated the building, as the fire services arrived to douse the fire.
The couple suffered slight injury from smoke inhalation. Their flat was uninhabitable, but the other tenants were able to return home.
