Negligence, incompetence puts Lahore’s waste management in shambles
Lahore (Dunya News) – With Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC)’s Albayrak still on strike over non-payment of billions of rupees, garbage collection from the city has come to a grinding halt.
Half of the provincial capital’s 4,500 garbage dumpsters are lying completely filled. Piles of garbage can be seen around areas of Shadman, Abbott Road, Lakshmi Chowk, Mall Road, China Scheme, Shalamar Bagh, Garhi Shahu and Anarkali.
Moreover, garbage has also not been collected from areas such as Mughalpura, Old Lahore, Ravi Road, Badami Bagh and Shadbagh.
Albayrak drivers, supervisors and sanitary workers are on strike over non-payment of salaries. According to sources, only Rs 80 million have been released for paying off the workers instead of the billions that are due.
However, CEO LWMC Imran Sultan says the city’s waste will be reduced to zero within five days.
