Rain continues to bring more misery for Karachiites

The downpour has caused urban flooding in various parts of Karachi on Tuesday.

KARACHI (Dunya News) - The ongoing spell of monsoon rain in different parts of Karachi has worsened the situation as downpour has caused urban flooding in the city and rainwater has accumulated on roads and all low-lying areas, resulting in disruption in the traffic flow.

The downpour was reported from several localities in the city including Surjani Town, Baloch Colony, Shahra-e-Faisal, Nursery, PECHS, Ferozabad Mahmoodabad, Cantt Station, Qayyumabad, Defence, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad and other areas.

In addition, the accumulation of three to four feet of water in certain residential areas of the city hinders traffic flow and causes traffic congestion.

Heavy rain caused a breach in the dyke of Sukhan Stream due to which water entered hundreds of houses in Arafat Town, Madina Colony, Khuldabad, Marghi Khana and also reached the National Highway.

The National Highway was closed to traffic as a precautionary measure and traffic was diverted to Malir.

The rain also caused a breach in the dyke of Malir Stream in Dada Bhai Town in Baloch Colony and the water entered the residential area. Several people have been stranded due to the flooding.

Pakistan Army soldiers are also busy in helping the civilians as the Lath and Thado dams overflowed in Kirthar regions due to heavy rains in Karachi.

According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), there was severe flood situation near the Northern Bypass as Lath dam overflowed.

Meanwhile, Korangi Causeway has been closed for traffic keeping in view the intensifying situation while traffic at Godam Chowrangi has also been diverted towards Jam Sadiq bridge. Edhi volunteers rescued six people, including a policeman, who were trapped in rainwater at the causeway.

On the other hand, rescue operation has been launched to rescue cars entrapped under the avalanche in Gulistan-e-Johar.

Chief Minister of Sindh (CM) Murad Ali Shah has also paid a visit to different rain-hit areas in Karachi and directed to speed up water drainage system.

He has also ordered the Karachi commissioner to help those stranded in their houses in Madina Town, Yar Muhammad Goth, Malir and Sukkur Nullah due to rainwater and provide them with food and other things. Won’t leave the people alone in this time of need, he pledged.

While reacting on the Karachi situation after heavy rain, Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan has directed the federal institutes to provide relief to the locals. He further appreciated NDMA and Pakistan Army for their assistance in this regard.

Earlier, Sindh Education Minister, Saeed Ghani reached there after water inundated the area. The minister said that water entered the residential area from Malir Stream in Dada Bhai Town due to technical issue of a gate. Now the gate has been completely closed and the flow of water has been stopped.

He said that heavy machinery has reached the area and work to drain the water has been started.
