Science and religion are completely unrelated: Fawad Chaudhry

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry has said that he does not believe that science and technology have anything to do with religion and he has asked religious scholars to try and understand this.

Talking about his ongoing war of words with Ruet-e-Hilal committee in Dunya News program "Nuqta-e-Nazar", he said that he respects Mufti Muneeb-ur-Rehman as an elder despite what he may think about him.

Talking about the Supreme Court’s remarks about closure of YouTube, Fawad Chaudhry said that shutting down everything would not solve anything and would do more harm than good. He said that when he used to speak in favor of regulations on social media he was widely criticized.

He said that there is a plethora of hateful speeches on social media but our institutions can’t do anything about it, there is much room for improvement. A fatwa was issued against six ministers but the cyber crime wing could not take any action, he added.

Replying to a question, the Federal Minister said that we have great respect for the Supreme Court but its observation was misrepresented. YouTube, Facebook and Google have opened new avenues for countless individuals, if they are restricted, people will suffer a great loss.

He also said that we must end child abuse, sexual harassment and hate speech. In this regard, we need to strengthen the FIA and focus on judicial, police and electoral reforms. The Election Commission should be strong and independent so that no one can raise any doubts about its functioning.
