Former Karachi Mayor Nazim Naimatullah Khan passes away at 90

Sindh Governor Imran Ismail and JI chief Sirajul-Haq expressed their condolences over Khan's death.

KARACHI (Dunya News) – Former Mayor of Karachi and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) senior leader Nazim Naimtaullah Khan has passed away at the age of 90 on Tuesday after a prolonged illness.

Sindh Governor Imran Ismail and JI chief Sirajul-Haq expressed their condolences over Khan’s death.

Murtaza Wahab also expressed his condolences and said his contribution to the city of Karachi would always be appreciated by the people of the city.

“May Allah SWT bless his soul and give strength to the bereaved family. His contribution to Karachi would always be cherished by the people of the city,” Wahab tweeted.

Sindh Information Minister Saeed Ghani also expressed his grief at Khan’s passing.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah also expressed his condolences at the former nazim’s passing.

Who was Naimatullah Khan?

Born in Ajmer Sharif (India) in 1930, Naimatullah Khan served as the 27th mayor of Karachi from 2001 to 2005.

He graduated as a master of journalism from the Punjab University and acquired a law degree from the Karachi University.

He was a lawyer by profession. He was also the chairman of the Alkhidmat Foundation, an NGO. 

As mayor of Karachi, in 2005, he was selected to be a contesting candidate in the Top-20 Mayors of the World list.

He was the first mayor of Karachi after the devolution plan under President Pervez Musharraf regime in Pakistan. He joined the JI after inspiration from the thoughts of Abul A’la Maududi and Naeem Siddiqui.

Khan succeeded in getting an amount of Rs2,900 million for the reconstruction of Karachi, city council approved various projects such as 18 flyovers over major roads, six underpasses, two signal-free roads and a huge water supply scheme for the people of Karachi. It was for the first time in the history of Karachi that all stakeholders in Karachi were incorporated for the developmental work in Karachi.

The Karachi development plan comprised signal-free main roads, many fly overs, underpasses and the replacement of many water and sewerage lines.

One of his projects, as the city mayor, was the Green Line Bus Project for Karachi where he imported buses from Sweden.

Khan resigned from his office in June 2005, and was not re-elected in the next 2005 local city elections.
