ECP directs Bilawal to remove contradiction in tax returns
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday has directed Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to remove contradiction in his tax returns in 15 days. A two-member bench headed by acting Chief Election Commissioner heard the issue. During the proceedings, the PPP chief’s lawyer Farooq H Naek raised objection on the jurisdiction of ECP for hearing the tax returns matter. He said that the commission can only seek explanation over the contradiction and cannot hold any inquiry.
Subsequently, the ECP has adjourned the hearing till February 6.
Earlier, the commission had continuously sent letters to Bilawal Bhutto for not submitting correct details of assets and tax returns. Under section 137 of the Elections Act, 2017, it’s compulsory for parliamentarians to submit annual statements of their assets to ECP.
