Wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim top scored for his side with 83, while Shakib Al Hasan (51) registered his fifth 50-plus score in six innings to reclaim his position as the tournament s leading scorer.

Shakib s 51 laid the foundations for Bangladesh to score 262-7 and made him the leading run-scorer in this year s World Cup. The 32-year-old then ripped through the Afghan batting line-up with superb figures of 5-29 from 10 overs.

Bangladesh are up to fifth place in the 10-team group stage, one point behind fourth placed England in the race to seal a semi-final berth via a top four finish.

Off-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman was the pick of the Afghan bowlers claiming 3-39 as his team chase their first victory of the tournament after six defeats in a row.

Victory for Bangladesh would move them into fifth place in the 10-team table.

That would leave Bangladesh within one point of fourth placed England, who play Australia on Tuesday, as the race hots up to qualify for the semi-finals via a top four finish.

Afghanistan became the first team to be eliminated after an agonising 11-run loss against India on Saturday, when Mohammed Shami’s final-over hat-trick denied them a famous upset.

The toss was delayed for ten minutes owing to wet outfield after rain. Afghanistan have made two changes as Hazratullah Zazai and Aftab Alam have been left out for Dawlat Zadran and Samiullah Shinwari. Shinwari is playing his first match of the tournament.

Bangladesh have also made two changes. Mosaddek Hossain and Mohammad Saifuddin are in for Rubel Hossain and Sabbir Rahman. Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza said he doesn’t mind batting first because this is a used wicket, same pitch from the India versus Afghanistan match.
