IMF, WB officials have served as SBP governors in the past: Iftikhar Durrani

Iftikhar Durrani said that PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto has weak memory.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Media Iftikhar Durrani on Wednesday while reacting to Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s statement, issued the list of former State Bank governors.

In his statement, Durrani taking at jibe at Bilawal said that the PPP’s accidental chairman’s memory is weak, adding that highly educated Pakistanis have served in other countries.

He said that these intelligent Pakistanis had in the past been appointed on key positions including State Bank governor.

The prime minister office spokesperson said that Muhammad Yaqoob, who had served the IMF till 1993, served as Central Bank governor for six years. At that time, PPP and PML-N were in power.

Durrani went on to say that Ishrat Hussain, who worked with the World Bank, was appointed State Bank governor in 1999. Ishrat Hussain also served as governor for six years.

Shamshad Akhtar, who worked with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), was appointed state bank governor in 2006, while in 2009, commercial banker Saleem Raza was appointed.

Yaseen Anwar and Ashraf Wathra were also appointed state bank governors. They also worked with international bank.
