Indian top court forms mediation committee in Babri Masjid land case

NEW DELHI (Dunya News) – Indian Supreme Court (SC) on Friday has formed a three-member mediation committee in Babri Masjid land dispute case. A Constitution bench of SC headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi appointed Justice Khaliifulah (Retd), Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and senior advocate Sriram Panchu as mediators in land title dispute. The committee will start its work in a week. During the hearing, the CJP said the case was not about property, but about "mind, heart and healing-if possible. It was December 6, 1992, when a large group of Hindu extremists along with prominent members of BJP, Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and troops of Indian Army demolished the ancient Babri mosque. Constructed in Ayodhya in the year 1527, the mosque’s property became disputed after a movement against the structure and in favour of the ‘restoration’ of Ram Mandir was launched by extremist Hindu parties like VHP, Shiv Sena and Bajrang Dal under the leadership of Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) L. K. Advani. According to Hindu ideology, the mosque was built on Ram Janmabhoomi or Ram Mandir. Following the demolition of the mosque, around 2,000 Muslims were massacred in parts of Delhi and Mumbai. Cases were registered against many culprits including notable figures like Kalyan Singh, the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shiv Sena-head Bal Thackeray and L. K. Advani. Yet, no judgment has been passed till date on this barbaric attack.
