ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday reopened a 29-year-old case against Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif pertaining to construction of shops on land owned by a shrine in Pakpattan. Back then, Nawaz Sharif was Punjab’s chief minister (CM).

As per details garnered, SC resumed the hearing of the case today while issued notices to Nawaz Sharif and eight others.

As the hearing proceeded, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Saqib Nisar and defence counsel exchanged hot words.

“Under which law, Nawaz Sharif [then Punjab CM] had allowed construction of shops on land owned by shrine. Under which law, [then] Punjab govt had taken back notice declaring that land wasn’t for sale”, remarked CJP.

To this, defence counsel Iftikhar Gillani responded that land had been given back to the owners under the same law on which it was taken away.

The atmosphere turned fetid when defence counsel argued that SC had termed notification unconstitutional. He said, “You are not paying attention to my arguments”. To this, CJP directed Gillani to keep his volume low. “SC shields Constitution. I will set hearing of your cases on my bench”, remarked CJP.

Later, the court issued notices to Nawaz Sharif and eight others while hearing was adjourned.
