Dense fog in recent two days has been shrouding north Chinas Hebei Province, east Chinas Shangdong and Jiangsu Province, causing serious traffic congestion and closure of some expressways.Meteorological authorities on Sunday issued a blue-coded alert for heavy fog across the countrys central and eastern regions from Sunday night to Monday morning.Fog has spread in most parts of northern China, parts of the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, the Huaihe River and the Yangtze River, as well as the northern part of the southern China and the eastern part of southwest China, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) said.With visibility dropping to less than 1 km, or even below 500 meters, some expressways in the southern and eastern part of Hebei Province, the western part of Shandong Province and the northern part of Jiangsu Province have been closed and traffic policemen have been sent to direct traffic. Moreover, Shijiazhang Airport has been closed for hours due to the heavy fog.The NMC reminded residents living in those regions of taking precautions and reducing their outdoor activities.Airport, expressways and river ferries should adopt necessary measures to ensure safety, the NMC said.At least 30 people have been killed and dozens others injured in pile-up accidents on mist-shrouded expressways in eastern Zhejiang province and northern Tianjin municipality over the past two days.A new round of cold spell has visited the northern parts of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region starting from Sunday, bringing moderate rains, sleet and high winds, the NMC said.Temperatures in the central and eastern regions of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and other areas in northern China will drop by at least 10 degrees Celsius, with strong winds expected in some regions in the coming three days, according to the NMC.
