GRENOBLE (AFP) - An off-piste skier was killed in an avalanche Saturday in the French Alps, the authorities said, bringing to at least 15 the number of people killed in snow slides since the start of the season.

The avalanche took place at around 13:30 at an altitude of just over 2,200 meters (7,000 feet) near the La Tania ski resort.

The male victim has not yet been identified.

An investigation into his death was launched.

Local media said that rescue workers were still on the scene two hours after the avalanche, to ensure there were no further victims.

The accident is the latest in a series of deadly avalanches across the Alps.

Six members of the French Foreign Legion were killed after being swept away by a wall of snow during a training exercise in the Alps late last month.
