Nawaz, Maryam and Safdar have been sentenced to 10, 7 and one year(s) in jail, respectively.

LAHORE (Dunya News) - Maryam Nawaz on Friday suggested his father and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was handed imprisonment sentence for “standing up to hidden powers”.

An accountability court jailed Nawaz Sharif for 10 years over his family’s purchase of upscale London flats. Maryam and her husband Captain (retired) Safdar were given seven and one year jail terms, respectively.

“Standing up to hidden powers who have ruled the country for almost 70 years! That’s a puny punishment,” Maryam wrote on Twitter.

“Well done Nawaz Sharif! You weren’t afraid, you did not yield! You preferred Pakistan over your life. People are with you. God willing, you will win!”

Nawaz Sharif was ousted from his third term as prime minister by the Supreme Court last year following a corruption investigation.

"(Nawaz Sharif) has been awarded 10 years imprisonment and an eight million pound ($10 million) fine" over the purchase of high-end properties in London, defence lawyer Mohammad Aurangzeb said.

Prosecution lawyer Sardar Muzaffar Abbas also said that the court had ordered the properties, in London s exclusive Mayfair, be confiscated by the federal government.

Both Nawaz and his daughter were in London on Friday with Nawaz’s wife, Kulsoom, who is being treated there for cancer and is in a coma after suffering a heart attack last month.
