PML-N head position vacant: ECP removes Nawaz's name after SC verdict
Election Commission of Pakistan will write to PML-N and order it to appoint new president
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) declared on Wednesday that the position of head of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is vacant, after implementation of the Supreme Court (SC) verdict while hearing petitions against Election Act of 2017.
ECP held a quick meeting after the apex court ruled its verdict of disqualifying the ex-PM from PML-N headship. In the meeting, it was decided to implement the court’s orders, sources privy to ECP told.
The election body has decided to write a letter to the PML-N leadership and ask them to appoint the president of the party without which the party will become dysfunctional.
SC disqualified Nawaz Sharif as president of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in the verdict regarding petitions against Election Act of 2017.
While announcing the verdict, the apex court said that a person who doesn’t qualify on Article 62 and 63 of the constitution can also not hold the office of presidency of any political party.
“Ineligible person cannot hold the office of party presidency,” the court said. SC has also annulled all decisions made by Nawaz Sharif as the party head.
Meanwhile, former secretary of ECP Kanwar Dishad has asserted that the SC verdict in Nawaz Sharif’s party chief case annuls Senate elections 2018 which were scheduled for March 3.
