The authorities had received few complaints against Save the Children in 2012, says Nisar

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Federal Interior Minister on Monday has said that the office of non-government organisation (NGO) Save the Children is still locked down and the government has not decided to open it.

He expressed these views in a press conference in Islamabad.

The minister said that the government is chalking out new policies for NGOs. He said that at least 38-40 percent NGOs unregistered in the country. Efforts of most of the NGOs working in Pakistan are admirable, he added. Nisar said that the new policy regarding NGOs would bring all the information about organizations on paper.

He said that all NGOs must function under the rules and regulations of the country. The federal minister said that the authorities would not provide visas to organisations before registration and checking of documents.

Nisar said that the government is deliberating over a recommendation of bringing a key law for NGOs in action. The authorities had received few complaints against Save the Children in 2012, he added. The minister said that no NGO would be allowed to work against the national and Islamic values.

Nisar also said that Save the Children has been registered since 1997 and none has ever alleged it to be working against Pakistan.
