Syria: Govt supporters demonstrate in Damascus

Tens of thousands of Syrians demonstrated in support of President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday.

The crowd gathered in a central square in the capital Damascus carrying Syrian flags and pictures of Assad. Assad is facing a challenge to his rule from popular protests demanding greater freedom and an end to corruption. More than 60 people have been killed so far in a crackdown in southern city of Deraa on the Jordanian border that poses the most serious challenge to President Bashar al-Assad.Assads crackdown on what his officials say are armed groups has drawn international condemnation as protesters, emboldened by uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt, confronted the security system of one of the most tightly controlled Arab countries.
