Jordan: British Foreign Secretary meets King Abdullah II

British Foreign Secretary William Hague is on a regular tour of North Africa and the Middle East during most irregular times.

He met with Jordans King, in the Jordanian capital Amman, a day after the biggest protest yet against Egypts president Hosni Mubarak. It was these protests, which began more than two weeks ago and are showing no sign of abating, as well as the ousting of Tunisias president in a popular revolt that prompted King Abdullah of Jordan to bring in political reforms and reshuffle his cabinet in an effort to quell more radical demands for change by his people. Hague spoke with the King about support from the UK for Jordans efforts to open up the political space and also about further economic development. He also urged Israel to tone down its belligerent language in the wake of protests and uprisings spreading from Tunisia to Egypt and beyond. The intervention came as the situation in Egypt intensified, with thousands of protesters again on the streets of Cairo demanding President Hosni Mubaraks immediate departure.
