Kashmiri students attacked again, this time over India vs Pakistan T20 match: Reports
Police say they're awaiting report from university administration and that action will be taken.
(Web Desk) – As many as 12 Kashmiri students were reportedly attacked and injured at a university in Indian state Rajasthan over India versus Pakistan T20 cricket world cup opening match. All twelve students sustained injuries.
Reportedly, a few locals started swearing at Kashmiri students in the morning on Friday. According to a student at the Meewar University quoted by a Kashmiri news agency “Situation turned hostile after around 30-40 local students thrashed four Kashmiri students.”
The students insist that this is a discriminatory and cricket related attack as the Kashmiri news source continues to quote “We were preparing for Friday prayers…, in their assault, one student fell unconscious, who was removed by his colleagues to the hostel room. In the meantime, the local students including the residents of the area started to pelt stones on us.”
Students alleged that the incident took place in presence of university administration and according to some reports, in front of police. They claim that at least 650 students at the university were threatened.
He alleged that all this happened in the presence of the local police and varsity administration and they played role of ‘mute spectators’. About 650 Kashmir students who are pursuing different courses at the varsity have been ‘threatened’.
Insisting they are being harassed since Asia Cup game between India and Pakistan in which India was defeated after a thrilling game. The source quotes them saying “since then, they are targeting us and they want us to leave the varsity … we want to leave the varsity but we have been cornered from all sides and they aren’t letting us to go.”
The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Chittorgarh is quoted by the Kashmiri news sources as saying “a local student has sustained minor injuries in a scuffle between two groups. The police is on the spot and we are ascertaining the facts and a case will be filed in this regard.”
Police maintain they have sought a report from the university administration adding that the action will be taken against those responsible.
A university in Uttar Pradesh has expelled as many as 67 Kashmiri students (130 according to some reports) for celebrating Pakistan s victory against India in a thrilling Asia Cup cricket match between the archrivals on Sunday, prompting the management to take ‘action’.
The university initially decided to suspend only the offending students but following a ‘three-tier’ inquiry, it was decided to suspend as many as 67 students because they didn’t reveal the names of the few offenders.
