Twentieth anniversary of fall of Berlin Wall on November 9
November 9 sees the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall. The Wall divided the German city for 28-years, an event which has come to symbolise the collapse of communism across Europe. At the end of World War Two, Germany was divided into four military occupation zones; French, British, American and Soviet, with the city of Berlin also split into four sectors.Faced with growing numbers of its citizens and skilled workers leaving the repressive state, East Germany's leaders feared a threat to their existence. Between 1945 and 1961, some three million people moved to the West from Soviet-occupied East Germany and East Berlin. The Wall was built to stop the flood of East Germans to the West, becoming a symbol of their lack of freedom.
