The World Food Programme (WFP) delivered food and medicines on Thursday to landslide hit areas in the northern Philippines, where thousands of survivors remain homeless. The WFP flew two helicopters to Benguet province, carrying one metric tonne of aid boxes containing high energy biscuits, medical kits and packages for children. The Russian-piloted helicopters were to deliver the aid boxes around villages and conduct a reconnaissance flight. They will stay in the Philippines for one month. The U.N. and the Philippine government issued a joint appeal last October 8 for the victims of Typhoon Ketsana. The two typhoons have killed more than 700 people, and caused damages worth around $497 million U.S. dollars. Around 140,000 homes were damaged. In Benguet province, dozens remain buried in the landslides as recovery efforts are strained by limited tools. Thousands of residents in the mining and vegetable-growing province have lost their homes and hundreds are still staying in evacuation centres.
