The project will be launched in Gansu province located in northwest China.

Northwest Chinas Gansu province will soon launch a project to restore the Crescent Moon Lake in the city of Dunhuang. The project aims to make the lake deeper from current one meter to over two meters, and expand its water surface from less than 0.6 hectare to more than 0.8 hectare. One of the measures is to pump water from nearby reservoirs. The local government also forbids groundwater mining within a radius of one kilometre around the lake, so that it will be possible to raise the underground water level through a continuous supply of surface water. With a reputation of number one lake in the desert, the Crescent Moon Lake is known for having never been dried up in drought nor been buried in desert.
