Face cream more expensive than gold

A Japanese firm is to launch a skincare cream priced at 8,440 for a single 50-gramme jar.

Shiseido Co will release La Creme on September 21 to mark the 30th anniversary of its most luxurious beauty product line, Cle de Peau Beaute.At nearly £169 per gramme, it is more expensive than gold - a bargain at a mere £33 per gramme - and believed to be the most costly face cream ever sold.Only three jars of the product are being sold, each container hand-crafted and made up of 30 layers of crystals and three platinum rungs, Shiseido said. The jar is being produced jointly by the cosmetics firm and Crystal Saint-Louis, a specialist glassmaker from France whose designs are highly sought after by collectors.Shiseido said it will accept orders for the three products at its main store in the upmarket Ginza district of Tokyo from August 30. If it receives more then three orders, it will hold a draw for the winners.We do not usually make limited editions of our products, but this is to mark a special occasion for the Cle de Peau Beaute line, said Megumi Kinukawa. We hope it will appeal to our loyal customers and people who are interested in gorgeous brands.The line has powerful anti-ageing properties, the company said, and can both lift and tighten skin on the face.For anyone now able to afford the cream in the commemorative containers, Shiseido is also releasing a second 50-gramme limited edition container of the cream for Y84,000 (£627.63).Shiseido is Japan s largest cosmetics firm and has annual global sales of around Y638.1 billion (£5.13 billion). Domestic sales have been hurt in Japan s recent economic downturn, but the trend that has emerged is for super-luxury brand products.
