Croatia, the 2005 champions, knocked the United States out of the Davis Cup with 3-2 victory in their quarter-final. Marin Cilic took an unassailable 3-1 lead by defeating James Blake 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in the fourth rubber, paving the way for Croatia to entertain the Czech Republic in the semi-finals in September. Juan Carlos Ferrero was master of the Marbella bullring when he steered defending champions Spain into the Davis Cup semi-finals while Croatia knocked out 32-time winners USA. Former world number one Ferrero, playing his first Davis Cup tie since 2005, replaced out-of-form Tommy Robredo for the decisive last rubber of the quarter-final against Germany and he responded in style.
