NA passes bill for women emancipation, inheritance rights

National Assembly has approved a bill laying out stern penalties for exploitation of women.

Whoever pressurises a woman to marry against her will or asks her to marry with the Holy Quran would have to face imprisonment for 10 years, with a fine.The National Assembly gave approval to the amended bill 2008 of Pakistan Penal Code.Different penalties have been approved for the men depriving women of the right to inheritance, bullying women to marry against their will or wedding with the Holy Quran or committing Wani or Sawar.As per details, the man who deprives a woman of her inheritance would be awarded imprisonment from five to 10 years and Rs 1 million fine or both.The man who compels a woman to marry to settle any dispute in the name of reconciliation or Wani or Sawara would be awarded imprisonment for at least three years and maximum seven years with fine worth Rs 0.5 million.Moreover, the man who bullies or forces a woman to bind in wedding contract by force or other so-called traditions would have to face imprisonment for three years with a fine worth Rs 0.5 million.The bill will be put in the Senate for approval.
