Imran Farooq murder case: ATC sentences key suspects to life imprisonment
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Thursday has sentenced key suspects Moazzam Ali, Khalid Shamim and Mohsin Ali to life imprisonment in murder case of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Dr Imran Farooq.
While announcing the verdict that was reserved on May 21, the court convicted all three suspects and directed them to pay Rs1 million each as compensation money to the family of slain.
Dr Imran Farooq, a senior leader of the MQM, was stabbed to death by unidentified men outside his home in London on September 16, 2010.
He had claimed asylum in Britain in 1999 and was wanted in Pakistan over different charges including torture and murder but always said that the accusations were politically motivated.
A key suspect in the case, Khalid Shamin, in a confession statement made to the Pakistani law enforcement officials, claimed that the party founder gave him directions to assassinate Farooq in a telephonic speech to party workers in Karachi.
MQM leader was killed because he was a “potent threat to the leadership of MQM”, the suspect stated.
On December 5, 2015, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had registered a case under terrorism provisions against MQM chief and other party leaders.
In December 2019, Scotland Yard officials had submitted important evidence related to Imran Farooq murder case in ATC.
During the hearing, the investigators presented the CCTV footage of the incident, one brick, two sharp weapons and proper diagram of the crime scene.
