Verdict in Mashal Khan lynching case to be announced today

HARIPUR (Dunya News) – Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) will announce verdict in Mashal Khan murder case in Central Jail in Haripur today (Wednesday).

Suspect Imran, who confessed to open fire at Mashal, along with other 56 accused are in police custody while three culprits including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) former councilor are still not arrested.

Earlier, ATC had indicted 57 suspects involved in Mashal Khan murder case during the hearing, The suspects denied all allegations leveled against them.

Mashal Khan, who was a mass communication student at Mardan’s Abdul Wali Khan University, was lynched to death by a mob of angry students over rumors that he and his friends committed blasphemy.

After Mashal’s murder, Supreme Court of Pakistan’s Chief Justice took notice and ordered a judicial inquiry. For this purpose, a joint investigation team was formed to investigate what led to the gruesome murder. The JIT report had revealed that the murder was committed with complete planning and it was not an incident.

The report also revealed that officials from the university administration were also involved in this murder. The report also stated that there were no solid proofs found about blasphemy committed by Mashal and his friends.  

Inspector General police (IGP) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Salahuddin Mehsud said it was not university administration’s duty to conduct inquiry, police should have been informed. He also told that police have still got no proofs regarding the allegations made against Mashal Khan.
