Opposition to table Elections (Amendment) Bill, 2017 in NA today

Senate has already adopted the bill with 49 votes in favour and 18 votes against it.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News)- Opposition is all set to table Elections (Amendment) Bill 2017 in National Assembly (NA) today (Tuesday) seeking an amendment to the recently-passed Elections Act, 2017, with an aim to repeal the controversial clause that allows a person ineligible to be elected as a lawmaker to become head of a political party.

As per details garnered, Pakistan Muslim League President and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has telephoned NA speaker Ayaz Sadiq in this regard and directed him to ensure presence of all lawmakers of ruling party in the session.

Opposition parties are expected to present bill on lower house of the parliament today.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chief Imran Khan will also not attend the proceeding.

On the other hand, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has arranged a lunch which was skipped by 60 members including former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar and Hamza Shehbaz due to unknown reasons.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader in NA Khurshid Shah held meeting with speaker Ayaz Sadiq and discussed the agenda of the session.

It is pertinent to mention here that Senate has already adopted Elections (Amendment) Bill 2017 with 49 votes in favour and 18 votes against it.
