Accountability court rejects Nawaz's petition to stop indictment
Nawaz Sharif had filed a petition in SC to merge all three references.
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The accountability court has on Thursday rejected ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s petition to stop his indictment as well as the trial against him until the verdict of the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan comes.
It was stated in the application that Nawaz Sharif has already appealed against all three National Accountability Bureau (NAB) references in the SC to merge them in one.
Let it be known that the former premier Nawaz Sharif had earlier on Friday moved country’s top court against NAB references through his counsel Khawaja Haris under Article 184 (3) of the Constitution.
“Filing of multiple references against an accused for the same alleged offence exposes him to double punishment, which is repugnant to the accused person’s Fundamental Right under Article 13 of the Constitution,” it read.
The application observed that references regarding asset allegedly owned, possessed or acquired by him, disproportionate to his known sources of income, is repugnant to section 9 (a)(v) of the NAO, 1999.
Nawaz Sharif, in his petition, pled the Supreme Court to halt proceedings of accountability court till judgment is served on constitutional plea and declare verdict to file three references illegal.
Anti-graft watchdog had filed three references against Sharif family and one against incumbent finance minister Ishaq Dar in light of SC’s July-28 landmark judgment.
