Protesting lawyers disrupt accountability court proceedings

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The judges of accountability court on Friday adjourned the hearing of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) references against ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz and hsi son-in-law Captain (r) Safdar after lawyers’ clash with security officers in judicial complex.

A scuffle erupted when security personnel barred lawyers and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders from entering the court after which the judges along with Justice Mohammad Bashir expressed resentment and left the court without hearing.



The spat also injured one lawyer who was immediately taken to the hospital for medical assistance.

Sources told that the court room has capacity of approximately 18 people while the lawyers were about 80.

On the other hand, NAB prosecution team has submitted report in headquarters, stating that the team was tried to be attacked as its head Sardar Mazhar Abbasi was pushed by the lawyers. The report further stated that the team member was tried to be removed from the dais.



Following the clash, Maryam Nawaz was also permitted to leave the judicial complex while the indictment proceeding has been adjourned till October 19.

Talking to media, Maryam Nawaz asked Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal to take notice of the incident and launch investigation into the matter.

Previously, the judge had allowed one-day immunity to Sharif family and summoned them on October 13. It was announced that the indictment will be heard on the day. The judge had expressed his fury over absence of the members of Sharif family and had decided to separate cases of each member in order to differentiate between present and absent accused.

Nawaz Sharif, Hassan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz are nominated accused in references regarding Park Lane Apartments, Al Azizia Steel Mills and offshore companies, while Maryam Nawaz and her husband Capt (retd) Safdar are nominated in reference regarding Park Lane apartments alone.

According to the affixed warrants of Hassan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz outside court, they will be declared fugitives if they don’t appear before accountability court within the duration of one month.
