(Web Desk) – Woman student of Punjab University has won a 17-year-long grueling legal battle against the varsity administration for bringing her disrepute and affecting her study, BBC reported on Tuesday.

Wajiha Arooj, 38, who now resides in Canada was a student of master s at the English department almost two decades ago and was wrongly marked absent in an exam leading to her failure to pass the course.

Over discussion with administration of the department, Arooj faced bizarre comments implying that she probably was not on campus that day which led to a barrage of speculation in the department. Apparently, officials implied that the family was not aware of her activities.

"At one point I was so distressed I even considered committing suicide," BBC quoted the victim.

The victimized student was hurriedly married off by the family fearing disrepute. Arooj moved to Canada with her husband and is settled there ever since.

Lahore High Court in its verdict today has ordered Punjab University to pay Rs 0.8 million to the family in damages.

Spokesperson for the varsity has said that the administration would first study the detailed verdict and if University of Punjab is in the right, it would challenge the verdict.
