CHITRAL (Dunya News) – Islamabad-bound flight of Pakistan International Airline (PIA) carrying 48 persons has crashed on Wednesday near Abbottabad due to technical snag.

Authorities have confirmed that the aircraft carried five of crew, nine women, 31 men and two infants from Chitral. Three foreigners are said to be on board the crashed plane as well.

Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has reported that the aircraft was confirmed crashed in a village near Havelian while spokesperson for the airline stated that an emergency response centre was activated.

Army has mobilised its resources including a copter and ground troops for immediate rescue operation.




Reportedly, known religious scholar Junaid Jamshed was onboard the flight along with his family as they were returning to Islamabad from Chitral.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Chitral was travelling to the federal capital using the same flight.

Officials concerned have stated that it would require around 40 minutes for rescue teams to access the crash site. Captain S Janjua was flying the aircraft while his brother, Ahmad Janjua was the Trainee First Officer.

Interior Minister, Chaudhry Nisar has directed to utilise all resources possible in rescue operations.  

Earlier in 2010, Airblue Flight 202 crashed on 28 July near Islamabad killing all 146 passengers and six crew on board. At least 17 flights of Pakistan International Airline have crashed in total till date.
