SC to hear Panama leak case on Nov 1st
Ishaq Dar and premier's son-in-law have also been served notices
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Supreme Court (SC) has set pleas against the premier and his family over Panama leak for hearing on November 1, a day before Imran Khan, Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is to demonstrate a sit-in in the federal capital.
The notices issued to Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif and others have demanded them to follow the rules and regulations and bring along National Identity Cards (NIC).
Those who have been subpoenaed besides the premier include his son-in-law, Captain (r) Safdar and Federal Finance Minister, Ishaq Dar among others. The development came in today after the hearing was adjourned for at least two weeks on Thursday.
In April this year, a set of documents was leaked from database of a law firm in Panama called Mossack Fonseca and studied by International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).
The documents were published by Panama Papers which held over 400 incumbent as well former statesmen from across the world responsible for setting up offshore companies. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s two sons and a daughter were included in the list and the fact was not taken well by opposition parties in Pakistan.
PTI, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Awami Muslim League (AML) and others formed an alliance over the issue and demanded the premier to resign. However, the pressure fizzled out in the months that followed when a parliamentary committee set up in the issue failed to put forth joint Terms of References (TOR) for probe of the leak under Supreme Court of Pakistan.
Imran Khan, ever since the revelation of Panama Papers has surfaced, is adamant that Nawaz Sharif should resign and present his properties and assets for accountability.
Different opposition parties have perceived establishment of offshore companies as means to illegally transfer funds abroad.
