27 killed, over 60 injured in bus collision near Khanpur
Bad road infrastructure and poor driving often cause accidents in Pakistan.
KHANPUR (Dunya News) - At least 27 people were killed and over 60 others injured when two buses collided in Pakistan‘s eastern province of Punjab on Monday morning.
The incident occurred when a speeding passenger bus collided head-on with another bus coming from the opposite direction near Dhareeja railway crossing near Khanpur.
One ill-fated bus was traveling from Karachi to Faisalabad while the other bus was bound for Sadiqabad from Faisalabad.
Rescue teams immediately arrived at the scene and shifted the bodies and injured persons to Tehsil Headquarter hospital in Khanpur.
Emergency was declared at the hospital where some of the injured are reportedly in critical condition.
According to doctors, some bodies are beyond recognition.
Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed sorrow over the incident and directed the authorities to provide best medical facilities to the injured.
Poor roads, reckless driving, and badly maintained vehicles kill up to 5,000 people in Pakistan every year, according to government statistics.
