SC upholds tribunal's verdict, orders re-election in NA-153 Vehari
Ruling party's candidate could not produce intermediate certificate
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Supreme Court (SC) has ordered re-election in NA-153 Vehari after discarding ruling party’s Dewan Ashiq’s appeal.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice (CJ) of Pakistan Anwar Zaheer Jamali heard the case.
CJ Jamali remarked during the hearing, how a person could pass BA and MA without intermediate. Laws were brought in action against fake academic credentials so that bogus people could not sit in the Parliament, he added.
The Supreme Court upheld election tribunal’s verdict and ordered re-election for the National Assembly (NA) seat.
In General Elections 2013, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Dewan Ashiq Hussain was victorious with more than 90,000 votes. Whereas, Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) Rana Qasim Noon Khan had approached the tribunal against Dewan’s alleged fake degree and concealment of assets.
The tribunal had annulled the results ordering a re-election.
Ashiq had also won General Elections 2008 by around 70,000 votes from Vehari. The tribunal had declared the election null and void as Ashiq could not produce his intermediate certificate.
