Federal govt invalidates Sindh Assembly's resolution, extends Rangers' powers
Pakistan Rangers is working under the Anti-Terrorism Act
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Federal government on Tuesday restored full powers of Rangers. It has stated that Sindh’s Assembly resolution cannot alter the law on counter-terrorism, reports Dunya News.
Government has rejected the recommendation to limit the powers of Rangers as proposed by Sindh Assembly. Interiror Minister has extended the powers by 60 days. In a letter sent to Sindh government, federal government has stated that Rangers will continue to work as per its previous rights.
In the contents of the letter, it has been stated that Pakistan Rangers is working under the Anti-Terrorism Act and that Rangers’ powers cannot be limited without amending the Act.
The letter further says that in order to limit the powers of Rangers, an amendment in the Anti-Terrorism Act is mandatory. It said the Pakistan Rangers is bound to work as per the Act and therefore its powers cannot be limited.
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcast Pervaiz Rashid has said that there is no chance of governor-rule however there is a need for Rangers operation in Karachi.
