US lawmakers table resolution ahead of PM Nawaz's visit

The House applauded Pakistan's efforts in combating the menace of terrorism.

WASHINGTON (Dunya News) - United States Congress on Monday has presented a resolution, seeking strong ties with Pakistan ahead of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s visit to Washington.

US Congress member Sheila Jackson Lee sponsored a resolution in the House to welcome Nawaz Sharif. In a resolution, the premier was termed as a ‘democracy icon’ for impressively ruling the government in democratic way.

The House applauded vigorous struggles of Pakistan in curbing the menace of terrorism from the state. The attendees collectively pledged to show solidarity with Pakistani nation in every situation.

The resolution further urged US government to strengthen diplomatic and mutual ties with Pakistan and also focused on addressing and resolving the causes of tension and taking all possible measures to prevent further intensification.

Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has left for the United States on a four-day official visit on the invitation of US President Barack Obama. Federal ministers including Nisar Ali Khan, Khawaja Asif and Prime Minister’s special advisers Tariq Fatemi and Sartaj Aziz will also accompany him.

According to details, Nawaz Sharif will hold talks with US President Barack Obama on October 22. The premier will also meet other top US officials including Secretary of State John Kerry, chairman of House Foreign Affairs Committee and members of Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

He will also have business interaction with Pakistan-US Business Council and US Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

PM Nawaz Sharif will apprise US President about his vision for regional peace and building stable and peaceful ties with all neighbouring countries, including India and Afghanistan. He will also discuss regional situation, matters relating to defence, counter-terrorism, economic, trade and climatic change with Barack Obama.

Before leaving, Sharif stated that Pak-US bilateral relations are continuously advancing on an upward trajectory and we want to expand the scope of strategic dialogue framework between the two countries.

Foreign Office Spokesman Qazi Khalilullah clarified that no deal between the two countries is being discussed currently. He said that history is witness that PM Nawaz has never caved into any country’s demands, adding that the purpose of the visit is to strengthen ties. He said PM Nawaz believes in safeguarding and furthering national interests.
