Independence Day rehearsals: Mobile phone service shut in twin cities

Police and Rangers personnel are deployed at the entry and exit points of the capital

RAWALPINDI (Dunya News) – Authorities on Thursday have shut mobile phone service in twin cities as part of a security rehearsal ahead of Independence Day while flag hoisting ceremony is ongoing in Convention Centre.

Capital Development Authority (CDA) will carry out fireworks display in parade ground near Faizabad. Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) suspended mobile phone service today around 6am. However, the service has been resumed in some areas of Rawalpindi.

Islamabad police said that the main ceremony is ongoing in Convention Centre which is why locals would not be able to use cell phones for some time. The authorities have maintained a high security in the cities to avoid any unfortunate incident.

Police and Rangers personnel are deployed at the entry and exit points of the capital. In addition, army personnel are also keeping check of important installments and highways.

Separately, Traffic police conducted a flag march in Peshawar in relation to August 14. Motorcycle riders along with police cars participated in the march from Aman Chowk Saddar to Gulberg.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Wahid Khan said that the march purported significance of Independence Day to the people. He further said that another purpose was awareness against one-wheeling.
