Karachi: Investigation into the bomb attack targeting SSP Farooq underway

KARACHI (Dunya News)— Investigative teams arrived at the scene of the blast in Karachi early morning on Friday to collect evidence regarding the attack on Senior Superintendant Police officer Farooq Awan. The investigative team also inspected the vehicles destroyed in the bomb blast yesterday evening.

The investigation into the attack on SSP Farooq Awan in the defence area of Karachi is underway.

Inspector General of Police (IG) Sindh led by Additional Inspector General (AIG) Karachi has set up a committee comprising DIG south and DIG of Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Moreover, different investigative teams visited the sight of the bomb blast to probe into the incident.

The team collected evidences and also reviewed the damaged vehicles. The wreckage of damaged cars has been shifted to another place to inspect the engine of the vehicle used to carry out the bomb blast.

According to bomb disposal squad (BDS), high explosive materials weighing up to 55 kilograms were used in the bomb. The explosion was carried out through a remote control device planted in a vehicle.

As many as two people lost their lives while 6 including Senior Superintendant Police (SSP) Special Investigation Karachi Farooq Awan got injured as a result of loud explosion that rocked Karachi’s Defense area on Thursday evening.

Farooq Awan is the cop who had arrested a key figure involved in the murder of American journalist Daniel Pearl. Daniel was murdered in Karachi on February 1, 2002 by Al-Qaeda militants.
According to police, SSP Farooq Awan was targeted in Defense Phase 4 when he was getting off the police mobile van.

However, SSP Farooq survived the attack. Several police vans were seriously damaged. The explosion caused a 20-feet deep pit in the road.
