SC summons electricity tariff hike notification

The government has submitted the power tariff hike notification to the apex court.

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - The Supreme Court of Pakistan has summoned the notification regarding fresh hike in electricity tariff by the government.

A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry heard electricity load-shedding case in Islamabad today (Tuesday).

During case proceedings, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry inquired about the procedure for increasing the electricity tariff.

Poor people will suffer more due to hike in power tariff, the CJP said.

“Who increased the power tariff,” the Chief Justice asked.

Deputy Attorney General told the apex court that recent increase was carried out by the government not National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) .

Chief Justice remarked that shortfall remained at 4,000 megawatt despite payment of circular debt. 

On the other hand, NTDC s Managing Director told court that price hike will not be applicable for consumers using 200 units.

Pepco chairman also informed THE court that country has faced Rs 40 billion loss due to line losses.

Later, the government submitted the notification to the apex court.

The Suprem Court will start hearing of the case on Wednesday.
