8 Killed, 23 hurt as violence erupts in Karachi

Lyari, Kharadar and neighboring areas reverberate with heavy gunfire and explosions on Monday.

 

KARACHI (Dunya News/Agencies) - Eight more people lost their lives while 23 others injured in unabated violence across the city, specially in PPP’s stronghold of Lyari on Monday.


According to reports collected from various sources, one person was shot dead near Mama Hospital, and another succumbed to his wounds in hand grenade attack in Lyari earlier on Monday.


Some 22 people, including women were injured when caught in exchange of heavy gunfire in different parts of Lyari including Alfalah Road, Mandir Mohallah and Hangoorabad.


In Nazimabad, gunmen opened fire on a car near Underpass, killing two persons on the spot, and wounding another.


Two dead bodies, tortured and killed, were found dumped in Steel Town area.


Elsewhere in the city, 2 people were gunned down in Orangi town Awami chowk and Baldia Muwach Goth areas.

According to police, Lyari, Kharadar and neighboring areas reverberated with heavy gunfire and explosions as unrest continued in the troubled area of metropolis.

At least ten back-to-back hand grenade attacks shook Khadda Market and nearby areas late night while firing continued in Naya Abad, Moosa Lane, ICI Bridge and Kharadar areas. The miscreants also used rockets and bombs in the clashes injuring five persons, witnesses told.


No loss of life and property has been reported from the hand grenade attacks so far.


The residents remained trapped indoors for the third consecutive day while shops and businesses remained closed due to the deteriorating situation. Intermittent firing continued in various areas.


Also, eight persons were held after police launched search operation in Patel Para and adjoining areas. Police sources told that arms and ammunition were also recovered from their possession.


Police also claimed that the accused belonged to a banned outfit and a political party who are currently being interrogated.
