Karachi unrest case: SC issues written order

The SCP Friday observed that 400 policemen are involved in criminal activities in the metropolis.

 

KARACHI - A larger bench of the apex court heard the Karachi law and order situation case in SC Karachi registry on Friday.
A Supreme Court judge remarked that people didn t trust the Karachi police since authorities were reluctant to depoliticize the department.


Justice Khilji Arif Hussain addressing the IG Sindh, remarked that the police has failed to protect its own, how will witnesses be protected.


Justice Jawad S Khawaja asked whether the apex court orders for the protection of witnesses were implemented. He said all the witnesses in the murder case of Geo News reporter Wali Khan Babar were killed.


IG Sindh told the court that people were not ready to testify in courts. Justice Amir Hani Muslim said why would people do so as neither was police able to investigate cases nor they did collect evidences.


The court expressed concern over surge in the number of people killed in the city, observing that the number had risen from 1800 to 2300.


The court also inquired about progress into its order regarding 1.4 million illegal immigrants in the city. The IG told the federal government had given Afghan refugees six-months.


The court summoned DG NADRA and other officials, observing that it wanted implementations of its orders.
The hearing was adjourned till February 25.
