President has no authority on judges' appointment: SC

ISLAMABAD - The Supreme Court on Thursday said that the President and the Prime Minister have no role in the appointment of superior courts judges.

 

It was stated in a 106-page verdict issued over the presidential reference in judge’s appointment case.

 

A five-member larger bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Khilji Arif Hussain reserved the verdict on December 21, 2012.

 

In its verdict, the Supreme Court said that the President is bound to comply with the recommendations of the judicial commission.

 

It also stated that the President has no authority to even appoint caretaker PM and chief election commissioner, stating that the president’s role was merely symbolic.
