Senate body for clear strategy on labourer rights protection

Senate body stressed to draw a clear strategy to protect rights of common labourers.

A meeting of the Senate Standing committee on Human Resource Development was held on Monday.Senator Mir Hail Khan Bazinjo while chairing the meeting said the industrialists in the country are exploiting rights of the common labourers, however the relevant departments have left millions of labourers on the mercy of the industrialists.The Secretary Ministry of Human Resources said while briefing the committee that his monthly pension was started from Rs. 75, which was now raised to Rs. 3600 in January 2012.The secretary informed the committee there are 86597 registered employees with EOBI however the insured people are Rs. 5.1 million. He said that an investment of Rs. 224.03 billion has been made in the department for the welfare of the labourers in different sectors.He stated the department has collected funds of Rs. 73.984 billion. He said presently 366 employees, 200 officers and 166 other staff members are presently working under EOBI.Senator Col (R) Tahir Hussain Mashhadi said while expressing concerns that prime purpose behind establishment of EOBI was to ensure welfare of the laborers and their families but not to raise the investments.The committee also expressed concerns over miserable and unprotected condition in the mining department of the country. The miners always use to enter in the mines without fulfilling necessary safety measures.The committee further directed in this wake that concerned departments, which are responsible for their safety, should make appropriate legislations to protect the lives of the miners.
