Shahryar Khan hints at Najam Sethi's appointment as next PCB chairman
Shahryar Khan made it cleat that no dialogues will be held in Birmingham with India.
KARACHI (Dunya News) – Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shahryar Khan has hinted at Najam Sethi’s appointment as next PCB chief, and made it clear that he will not contest election for the aforementioned post after completing his tenure.
Shahryar Khan spoke to media after attending the meeting of Senate Standing Committee on inter-provincial coordination, and said it does not matter how many names appear at media for the post of PCB chairman, the decision will be taken according to the set criteria.
PCB chairman told that any of the ten members of board’s governing council may be appointed as the new chief according to the constitution, and Najam Sethi can also be that person. He also verified that he will chair the annual meeting of PCB on May 25 as PCB chief for the last time, and leave the post after completing his tenure in August.
Shahryar Khan added that Patron-in-Chief of the Board, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, has the right to appoint two technocrats in PCB, and he can nominate anyone of his own choice.
On a question, PCB chairman responded that no decision has been made yet regarding the new Test captain, but without mentioning the name, said everybody knows who that person will be. He continued that not many names are under consideration, and the new Test skipper will be announced in September before series against Sri Lanka.
Talking about the roles of Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan, Shahryar said the board will give them formal offers to serve PCB, and hopefully they will accept it. He did not mention any details about their responsibilities, but announced to determine them soon.
Shahryar Khan said he will conduct inquiry and find out the reasons due to which Umar Akmal got unfit at the key moment when Champions Trophy was about to begin in England. He told that Akmal cleared the fitness test that was taken last month. He said Umar Akmal was dropped from the squad because the board strictly acts upon its policy of not selecting or retaining unfit players in the team.
While expressing disappointment, PCB chairman said nothing can be said about Umar Akmal’s nature. Sometimes, he involves himself in a scuffle with traffic wardens, and sometimes, goes to dance parties, continued Shahryar.
Dismissing all rumours regarding negotiations with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on bilateral series, Shahryar Khan said no dialogues will be held in Birmingham with India. He termed all reports fabricated.
It is worth mentioning here that Pakistan and India, the arch-rivals, will lock horns with each other on June 4 in Champions Trophy match, and reports were earlier floating that PCB may hold dialogues with BCCI over the issue of bilateral series which India has refused to play.
