NEPRA approves Rs 3.11 per unit cut in electricity tariff
NEPRA's latest decision would not apply to K-Electric consumers
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on Thursday gave the nod of approval to slash electricity tariff by Rs 3.11, thus effectively saving people’s 15 billion rupees, as Central Power Purchasing Agency’s recommendations were rejected.
Overall electricity generation during the month of November remained 7.17 billion units which cost Rs 25.24 billion. Ratio of fuel cost over electricity production remained Rs 3.52. However, consumers were being charged Rs 7.30 per unit during November for the same cost.
Logically, then, it would have made sense on the part of CPPA to suggest a drop in tariff by Rs 3.78 per unit. But, in a bid to appease companies producing electricity, CPPA recommended to grant relief package to the companies worth Rs 15 billion.
NEPRA officials correctly pointed to this anomaly and rejected CPPA’s plan during hearings. Meanwhile, NEPRA authorised CPPA to pay off dues worth Rs 4.5 billion to the electricity grids. Afterwards, the regulatory body proceeded to trim electricity price by Rs 3.11 instead of Rs 1.47. New tariff will come into effect from next month billings.
The recommended price relief, however, cannot be availed by the consumers of K-Electric.
